INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING
*Life does not always go the way we expect. Sometimes, we simply need a little clarity, a different perspective and someone who can help us find the right direction.*
Life can bring situations that are difficult to understand, accept or navigate. Sometimes the concern may be clear; at other times, several thoughts, emotions and circumstances may become mixed together, making it difficult to understand what is really troubling us.
Individual Counselling provides a dedicated and confidential space to talk, reflect and look at the situation more objectively.
The counsellor listens to your concerns, understands the circumstances, asks relevant questions and helps bring clarity to the situation. The purpose is not to judge you, tell you what to do or make the decision on your behalf.
It is about helping you understand the situation better, think more clearly and consciously determine how you wish to move forward.
When might Individual Counselling help?
An individual may consider Social Counselling when they are:
dealing with family situations or marriage-related concerns;
experiencing relationship troubles or difficulties;
coping with personal loss or grief;
experiencing loneliness or social isolation;
feeling disillusioned, directionless or unsure about their next steps in life;
going through a major life transition;
experiencing low confidence or reduced self-belief;
feeling uncertain about the future;
finding it difficult to accept or adapt to changes in life;
struggling with the gap between personal expectations and reality;
dealing with personal, family or social conflicts;
seeking an independent or third-party perspective on a situation; or
feeling stuck in life and unsure about how to move forward.
You do not necessarily need to have a clearly defined problem before approaching us. Sometimes, the need for clarity itself can be a reason to talk.
How does Individual Counselling work?
Understand the Concern
The individual gets an opportunity to explain what is troubling them in their own words. The counsellor seeks to understand the situation, its context and what the individual is actually looking for from the conversation.
Explore and Clarify
Through attentive listening and appropriate questions, the counsellor helps separate the immediate concern from the wider circumstances surrounding it.
This may help bring out aspects that may not have been apparent initially.
Identify the Fundamental Issues
The conversation seeks to go beyond the immediate concern and understand the underlying issues, expectations, perceptions or circumstances that may be influencing the situation.
Examine the Situation Objectively
The relevant aspects are considered without unnecessary judgement or personal bias. Where appropriate, the counsellor may highlight gaps between expectations and reality, perceptions and facts, or between what can realistically be changed and what may need to be accepted.
Facilitate Conscious Thinking
The counsellor encourages the individual to look at the situation from a wider perspective, understand the possible implications and consciously consider what may need to change, be accepted, adjusted or better understood.
Determine the Way Forward
The counsellor does not make the decision for the individual.
The objective is to help the individual reach greater clarity and confidence about the way forward, based on a more conscious understanding of their own situation.
What Individual Counselling is — and is not
Individual Counselling is intended to provide social and personal counselling support.
The counsellor does not diagnose medical or psychological conditions, prescribe medication, provide clinical treatment or undertake matters requiring specialised professional intervention.
It is also not about simply agreeing with everything the individual says.
Where necessary, the counsellor may respectfully question a perception, challenge a thought process or bring a different perspective to the discussion—even when that may not be what the individual initially expected.
Where a concern requires professional assistance outside the scope of Social Counselling, the individual may be advised to seek appropriate specialist support.
Target Outcome\*
To help the individual gain greater clarity about their situation, thoughts, expectations and circumstances, understand the wider picture more consciously and identify a constructive way forward.
The objective is for the individual to feel heard, understood, more confident and better equipped to take the next step.
The decision, however, remains with the individual.
\* Attention is drawn to the Client T&Cs and it is expressly communicated that Social Counselling cannot guarantee any particular outcome post counselling due to multiple external factors beyond the control of Social Counselling. Please refer to the Client T&Cs for more details. The target outcome may be fine-tuned based on the individual's specific circumstances.
