About Couple Counselling

A relationship can be strong, yet still face situations that are difficult to understand or navigate.

Two individuals may care deeply for each other and still experience differences in expectations, communication, priorities, family circumstances, cultural backgrounds, lifestyle choices or their vision for the future. At times, the concern may arise within the relationship itself. At other times, the relationship may be perfectly cordial, but external circumstances may create uncertainty about the future together.

Couple Counselling provides a structured and neutral space to understand these concerns, examine them objectively and explore the best possible way forward.

The objective is not to decide who is right or wrong. It is to understand the situation from both perspectives, bring out the material issues, examine their implications and help the couple consciously consider what may need to change, adjust, accept or be better understood.

02

What May Bring a Couple to Counselling?

Couples may seek counselling for a wide range of situations, including:

Communication and Understanding

  • Communication gaps or recurring disagreements.
  • Difficulty understanding each other's thoughts, expectations or behaviour.

Values, Priorities and Compatibility

  • Differences in values, priorities, lifestyle or personal choices.
  • Compatibility-related concerns.
  • Differences in expectations about responsibilities and the future.

Trust and Emotional Connection

  • Trust-related concerns or emotional distance.

Family, Culture and Social Background

  • Differences regarding family expectations or relationships.
  • Different cultural or social backgrounds.

Geographical and Career Circumstances

  • Geographical differences or concerns arising from living in different locations.
  • Career or job-related circumstances affecting the relationship.

Future and External Circumstances

  • Concerns about the future of the relationship.
  • Difficulty managing an external situation over which the couple has limited control.

A Neutral and Thoughtful Conversation

  • Any other situation where the couple feels that a neutral and thoughtful conversation may help.
03

Understanding the Situation Together

Sometimes, there may not even be a serious conflict between the two individuals. They may simply want to understand how a particular situation could affect their relationship and consider the options available to them.

04

How Does Couple Counselling Help?

The Counsellor listens to the perspectives of both individuals and seeks to understand what the actual concern is, where it originates and how it is affecting the relationship or their understanding of the future together.

The discussion may consider:

Individual Understanding and Areas of Alignment

  • What each individual understands and expects.
  • Areas of alignment as well as areas of difference.

Underlying Factors and Circumstances

  • The underlying factors contributing to the concern.
  • The circumstances surrounding the issue.

Implications and Responsibilities

  • The implications of different possible approaches.
  • Individual responsibilities and areas requiring consideration.
  • Relevant social and cultural considerations.

Change, Acceptance and Middle Ground

  • What may reasonably be changed or adjusted and what may need to be accepted.
  • Whether a practical middle-ground or mutually workable approach may be possible.
05

Conscious Thinking and a Balanced Perspective

The Counsellor also brings the Social Counselling values and conscious-thinking filters into the discussion wherever relevant, so that the couple is able to consider the situation from a wider and more balanced perspective.

The Counsellor may challenge an assumption, expectation or thought process where necessary. The purpose is not to tell the couple what they want to hear, but to help them understand the situation more clearly and consciously.

06

What Could Be the Outcome?

Every situation is different. Depending upon the circumstances, the counselling may help the couple:

Reconcile Differences

  • Reconcile differences.

Mutually Workable Solution

  • Arrive at a mutually workable or middle-ground solution.

Priorities and Expectations

  • Establish more appropriate priorities.
  • Develop more realistic expectations.

Understanding Thoughts and Behaviour

  • Understand the impact of their respective thoughts or behaviour.
  • Identify areas where a thought process may need to be fine-tuned.

Clarity on the Way Forward

  • Simply gain greater clarity about how they should move forward.
07

The Decision Remains with the Couple

The Counsellor does not decide on behalf of the couple.

The role of Social Counselling is to bring the relevant aspects to the table, examine them objectively and help the individuals consciously determine the most appropriate way forward.

08
